Eating and Drinking:
Eating and drinking out in a restaurant is very reasonable throughout
Maramures. Naturally, a meal out at a restaurant in Baia Mare or Sighet will be more expensive than a meal taken at a rural guesthouse. Generally speaking, the following guidelines hold true throughout the county.
A full meal (2 courses) in a restaurant, including drinks and tip, on average will cost one person 15-25 RON or 5-8 Euros. Pizza is very common, cheap, and usually tasty – running around 10-15 RON or 3-5 Euros for a good sized pizza. A 10% tip is considered appropriate for meals taken at a restaurant.
Beer and wine are very reasonably priced and very good. Domestic beers usually run around 1 Euro for 500ml and delicious Romanian wines average 3-6 Euros for a bottle. Spirits, especially whiskies, are expensive compared to beer and wine and can reach prices equaling those of Western Europe. Non-alcoholic beverages such as Coke generally run around 0.60 to 1 Euro depending on the size and the restaurant or bar.
Those visitors who wish to self-cater can get by on an even smaller budget as items at grocery stores are priced well below restaurants. Bigger cities offer the convenience of Western style supermarkets (though usually located towards the edge of town) and also are full of smaller, family-run shops. Villages may only have one store with a much more limited selection of products. Self-catering visitors can easily get by on as little as 8-15 Euros per day.
Visitors staying in rural guesthouses can opt to pay a few extra Euros in addition to their room rates to receive half board (1 extra meal) or full board (2 extra meals) in addition to breakfast. Eating at a rural guesthouse can be the culinary highlight of your stay in Maramures as you will be treated to copious amount of delicious home-cooked food and usually homemade wine and fiery palinca or horinca will be included in the price of your meal. Generally speaking expect to pay around 3-5 Euros for each additional meal at a rural guesthouse which will usually include multiple courses, alcohol, dessert, and coffee.
