Communication infrastructure is fairly good throughout
Maramures County, especially so in larger cities and towns. Villages will be connected to the fixed telephone network but may or may not have mobile phone coverage.

Public Phones: Public pay phones can be found throughout the country and even small villages should have at least one public phone (though not necessarily). To use a public phone you must purchase a public phone card which is made by Romtelecom, the Romania national telephone company. Cards cost 10 RON (2.9 Euro) and can be purchased at all Romtelecom and Post offices and also at most newsstands and small stores.
2. Mobile Telephones: Romania is serviced by 4 mobile phone service providers: Vodafon (Connex), Orange, Zapp Wireless, and Cosmote.
Visitors from Europe (West and East) can bring their own mobile phones and they can be used in Romania via international roaming. Mobile phones from the United States, unless they support GSM, cannot be used in Romania. Please contact your mobile telephone service provider for information on roaming charges.
If your mobile phone operates on a SIM card, you can purchase a SIM card through one of the mobile telephone service providers listed above for use while in Romania. Once you have purchased a SIM card (which will come with initial minutes) you can then purchase Pre-Pay recharge cards to replenish your minutes if necessary. Pre-Pay cards are usually sold in increments of $5, $9, and $15.
3. International Calling Cards: International calling cards can be purchased in various locations in larger cities in towns but are not available in most small towns and villages. Rates vary by card but generally range between 0.07 and 0.15 Euro cents per minute. Cards are denominated in Euros or USD though must be paid for in local currency. Some of the major brands of international calling cards are: RDS, Astral, Cardinal, and PCNET Voice. Some calling cards will not work on public phones.
4. Internet: Internet access is fairly widespread in Romania with the exception of small towns and villages. Nicer hotels may offer internet access in your room or in a small business center though you should check with the individual hotel for availability and possible costs. The best options for visitors are to use internet cafes. In larger cities and towns, internet cafes are very common and generally cheap. Prices range from 1.5 to 3.5 RON (0.4 to 1.0 Euro cents) per hour. Please note that the quality of the internet connection can vary greatly from one internet café to another.
