At the beginning of the 1990s the state-sponsored heavy industry largely collapsed leaving much of the population unemployed. Some returned to their villages whilst other remained in the towns and cities to establish themselves in the private sector.

Non-ferrous ore extraction and processing remains the county’s largest industrial activity and is perhaps the most prominent in Romania. Apparently, some 150 ores, out of the world’s 200 minerals, are to be found here. Gold, silver, lead, copper, zinc and pyrite are all produced here.

Other industries of notable importance are textiles, wood processing and food processing.

Just under 50% of the territory can be used for agriculture, although only 13% is used for crops.
