Starting with the 15th century, the fortification system of medieval city of Baia Mare consisted of strong walls of brick and stone, that had from place to place towers( bastions), which considerably increased the defense capacity when facing attacks from outside the fortress. Today, that defense system can be seen and visited and it is “The Butchers’ Bastion”, built around the year 1500. Near the Butchers’ Bastion, one of the main gates of the city’s entrance, Pintea Viteazul was shot in 14th of August 1703, during the anti-Habsburg uprising.
